Thinking about Adopting?

Before
Greyhounds racing

After
Greyhound at rest

If you are considering adopting a greyhound, this is where you can read about the Triangle Greyhound Society's (TGS) adoption procedures. It is our aim to ensure that greyhounds we adopt out will find homes with loving, caring people, so that both the dogs and their new owners are happy with the adoption.

TGS does not have an adoption kennel; we keep the dogs in our foster homes. You can either come out to our next public event to see them all at once (check calendar), or visit them one at a time.

What we usually do first is talk by phone. That way, we learn about your experience with pets, your lifestyle and your work schedule, and we get a better idea of what type of grey would work best for you. We ask for references, one from your current vet (if you have pets), one more from a non-relative friend or business associate. Once those check out, we schedule a "home visit," where we come to your house to talk about actually having a greyhound in your home (since they have somewhat different needs than other dogs.) It usually lasts about an hour. We might bring an available greyhound with us, if we have one that seems like it could be a good fit. We do ask that you fill out an adoption application form (click to view PDF file*) to document the information you have given us about yourself and your environment. Or you can fill out our online adoption application, which will get the process started more quickly.

If everything works out and we have a dog that fits, the adoption proceeds and you make a donation of $200 and sign an adoption contract. We talk about when would be the best time for you to take possession of your greyhound and give you time to get any needed equipment (crate, beds, etc.).

The dogs come fully vetted - neutered/spayed, with all shots.

If you don't have greyhound experience, it's good to do some reading. Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies is a good place to start. There's also Adopting the Racing Greyhound. You will find most of what you need to know in these books. If you buy these or other items through this link: http://www.adopt-a-greyhound.org/treats/books-amazon.html, a portion of your purchase will benefit Greyhound Rescue. See the link page for details.

After the adoption, we generally phone the new owners periodically for the first few months to answer any questions and to see that the adoption is working out to the satisfaction of the owner(s) and the dog.

If you have questions or need more information about the TGS adoption precedures, please contact us and we'll get you the answers you need to get started in adopting the nicest pet you'll ever own.
